An Introduction to Spoken Interaction, Edwards, Anne, 9780582071308

Description

The aim of this book is to show how spoken interaction in general and, ultimately, different types of spoken interaction are structurally and strategically organized. Chapter 1 presents an overview of what is typical of spoken interaction in general. The idea is that this overview should prepare the reader for what is coming in subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 presents the five-level model of analysis, further developed in Chapter 3, giving a detailed description of the main strategies speakers use in conversation. Chapter 4 goes from a description of the structure of conversation in general to a comparison of different types of conversation. In Chapter 5, finally, there is a brief discussion of the link between spoken interaction and grammar. The book is meant to be used as a textbook, section by section and the reader is strongly advised to do the exercises accompanying each section to get a good grasp of the analysis. For those already familiar with this type of analysis, the book can of course be used as a reference book.
