In response to the enduring legacy of the colonial, capitalist project, an increasing number of people are arguing that we have entered an era of social, cultural, economic, and environmental collapse. There is a heightened awareness of a range of global issues including racism and xenophobia, economic and cultural protectionism, environmental degradation, and climate change, yet there appears to be a resistance to taking action that challenges the status quo. The ongoing maintenance of the status quo ensures a way of life that continues to divide the world in unequal and inequitable ways, including in education. The complicity of all phases of westernized education in contributing to these issues has led to increasing calls to Indigenize and decolonize educational ideologies, structures, and practices. Decolonizing Educational Relationships presents a novel way of thinking, and a robust foundation for de/colonizing education relations in Higher and Teacher Education, illustrated by examples of applications to practice. In line with the de/colonial focus, the authors use a hybrid style of writing that weaves their own narratives into the story that stem from experiences of de/colonizing initiatives in a range of educational settings. Decolonizing Educational Relationships marks an important turning point in Higher and Teacher Education policy and practice, addressing the colonial structures that continue to govern education at the systemic level and centering critical relational approaches in teaching, research, and scholarship.
