Liberal Arts Education in the United States of America, Gayle, 9783639159172

Author: Gayle

Description

This book investigates a philosophy of highereducation, which, on a modern, international scale, occupies but a tinymicrocosm of the world’s institutions of tertiary learning. Nevertheless, liberal arts colleges uphold traditional values of education;therefore, remain as one of the last survivors of classical teaching andlearning. Upon closer investigation, the educational values ofthe ancient world experienced a rebirth in the modern university. First seen in Humboldt’s Germany, British institutions such asOxford and Cambridge adapted the German model for Englishpersonalities. Upon colonization of the New World, both German andEnglish influences crossed the Atlantic to permeate theUnited States. Eventually, the models of Oxford and Cambridge tookhold of America and spawned a new breed of higher education. This book delves into “Havenhurst College,” apseudonym, to examine a real liberal arts institution. For thesake of knowledge and the cultivation of the individual, one must hopethat this last remnant of classical teaching and learning willsurvive. Dr. Jennifer Chung earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree fromthe University of Oxford. She also obtained her Master of Science degree fromOxford. This book is adapted from her MSc thesis. Dr. Chung also has a Master of Artsdegree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from AmherstCollege.
