This text offers practical ways in which teachers can move from concern about their pupils and what they are learning, concern about their teaching, or even concern about other practices such as managing, to doing something about it in a practical and disciplined manner. At the heart of all enquiry lies “noticing”: noticing an opportunity to act, noticing something that might be a possibility to try out, and noticing oneself in the midst of professional acts, whether teaching, researching, attending meetings, administering, or supporting colleagues. Noticing can be developed into a disciplined form of enquiry, which can turn into research. The art of noticing is what teachers need to develop if they are to improve their practice and undertake successful research in their classrooms.
