Description
The author exhorts Americans from all walks of life to take control of the degenerating public education system. Finn reasons that as long as most Americans suppose that the children who are educationally at risk belong to someone else, we are not going to alter our own behaviour or that of our children or our schools. He notes that the system continues to lack accountability and quality control, while the teaching profession remains divided between “fads” and “stodgy rituals”. Finally, Finn calls on us to radically reform the education system, and demand that results be regulated through national standards, testing, curriculum, and enhanced responsibility for professional educators.
