The author has directed this text towards teacher training students as well as for in-service teachers wishing to improve their teaching skills. The study examines current language teaching aims and widely accepted approaches to the tasks of teaching the various language skills and aims to maximize pupils’ learning through criticism, review and self-evaluation. The specific problems of teaching at various levels of age and ability are also discussed and a final chapter deals with the management and use of teaching aids and technology. Each chapter contains proposals for self-review by either individuals or groups of teachers. The book is published in the light of the new GCSE requirements and it outlines all of the aims listed in the National Criteria for Modern Languages so as to be of maximum practical value to its readership.
