The study area Tamiraparani located between latitudes 8 25 and 9 13 N, and longitudes 77 10 to 78 10 E along the south east coast of India. Tamiraparani basin is one of the major river basins in Tamil Nadu, located between latitudes 8 25 and 9 13 N, and longitudes 77 10 to 78 10 E covering an area of 5,464 km2. A great river like the Cauvery, unlike most of the other Indian rivers, is fed by both the monsoons – the southwest and the northeast – and seen in full spate twice a year if the monsoons do not fail. In order to identify the nature of sediment character, the mode of deposition in river, estuary and marine regions of Tamiraparani and adjoining coastal areas grain size, heavy mineral, ecological parameter studies for both the monsoon have been carried out in detail.
